The bray of the hounds got louder.
“They’re close, Josie,” Cash told her.
The bear came around a boulder charging toward them. Every few yards it turned to fight off the hounds tearing at its back legs.
“God, Cash. That thing is coming right at me.”
“Stand, Josie. Take the shot. He’s coming, Shoot!”
With the rifle’s sights steady on the bear’s head, she pulled the trigger. “THUD.” The rifle misfired. The crazed animal dropped onto all four feet—butted her off the trail and swept a claw across her thigh.
Cash rushed the bear and sunk his Bowie knife into its heart.
“Damn it hurts, Cash.”
He grabbed her and turned her face close to his. “Where you bleeding, Josie? Where’d he git’ you?” he asked, kneeling at her side.
“My leg . . . dad. He got me deep.”
